Frequently Asked Questions

Question #1
How does this recycling process work?
Answer #1
Soiled bedding material, which includes urine, feces and bedding is conveyed into a proprietary (Patent Pending) dryer/shedder designed and developed by GreenScene Pellets Inc. This unique equipment provides a dry, odor and pathogen-free wood material that can be reused as bedding or processed further into pellets.

Question #2
What happens to the pathogens?
Answer #2
The processing system removes all the pathogens and mold spores using its unique design features combined with heat and sufficient residence time. The resultant dried material is tested regularly to ensure the absence of pathogens and spores.

Question #3
How can I use the recycled bedding?
Answer #3
The recycled bedding can be reused in the horse stalls immediately. This bedding material is dry, clean and soft. Horse owners will find it absorbs better than standard wood shavings.

Question #4
How much space is required for one plant?
Answer #4
The building and surrounding paved service area will have a footprint of 120 ft. (36 m.) by 150 ft. (46 m.). This will include the covered raw manure storage area as well as the machine and ancilliary equipment.

Question #5
Where can I see a plant in operation?
Answer #5
We have a plant in operation in Ladner, BC, Canada. Please contact Phil at (604) 534.7430 or by email at Phil@greenscenepellets.com .

Question #6
How is the plant powered?
Answer #6
The plant runs on three phase electricity and as a result it is carbon neutral. The heating system utilises a fuel source dirived from the dried material or pellets produced by the plant.

Question #7
Is the plant noisy?
Answer #7
Because the plant operates on electricity, noise is kept to a minimum and meets all regulatory standards. This sound (white noise) does not affect the horses in the immediate area.

Question #8
How many horses are required to make the plant profitable?
Answer #8
A large farm with 200 to 300 horses will see a return on investment within about 4 years. Having a plant on site will stabilize the cost of bedding and eliminate all the offsite waste hauling costs. Plants can be designed to process manure from over 3000 horses.

Question #9
What if I have a smaller horse farm?
Answer #9
Several smaller horse farms can pool their resources and set up a centrally located plant. As a result, the cost of bedding is stabilized and offsite waste hauling costs are reduced.

Question #10
What can I do with the excess bedding produced by the plant?
Answer #10
Any excess bedding not required by the farm can be sold to surrounding horse farms for bedding or processed further and sold as fuel pellets to greenhouse operations and other sources requiring fuel.

Question #11
How much does a plant cost?
Answer #11
A complete ready-to-go plant will require site preparation and a suitable building. Including these costs, with recycling machine, ancilliary equipment, a turnkey system can range between $1.2 and $1.5 million dollars. Pricing of local equipment and labour costs will adjust the final cost.

Question #12
What kind of financial assistance is available?
Answer #12
Because the recycling plant diverts waste from local landfills, local and regional governments often have financial assistance in terms of grants or low interest loans available.
The availability of this assistance can be determined through contacting local and regional governments.
Local and regional governments with large horse populations in or close to large metropolitan areas will often be open to assisting horse farms and racetracks.
